To keep cashmere knitwear in perfect condition, it is important to follow specific care instructions to ensure the fabric's quality and longevity. Here are some recommendations:
- Hand Washing: Hand washing is often the safest method for cleaning cashmere. Follow these steps:
- Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water (around 30°C/86°F).
- Add a mild detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics or woolens. Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach.
- Submerge the cashmere garment and gently swirl it around in the water, ensuring the entire garment gets soaked.
- Let it soak for about 10-15 minutes, then gently agitate the fabric without stretching or wringing it.
- Rinse the garment thoroughly with clean water until all the detergent is removed.
- Gently press out excess water without twisting or wringing the garment.
- Lay the cashmere flat on a clean towel and reshape it to its original dimensions.
- Allow it to air dry on a flat surface away from direct heat or sunlight.
- Machine Washing: Some cashmere garments may be labeled as machine washable. In this case, follow these guidelines:
- Use a gentle cycle and cold water setting (30°C/86°F) on your washing machine.
- Turn the cashmere item inside out before washing to protect the outer surface.
- Place the garment in a mesh laundry bag to prevent stretching or snagging.
- Use a mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics.
- Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach.
- Once the wash cycle is complete, remove the cashmere promptly and reshape it.
- Lay it flat to dry on a towel away from direct heat or sunlight.
- Dry Cleaning: If your cashmere garment is labeled as dry clean only, it's advisable to take it to a professional cleaner experienced in handling delicate fabrics. Inform the cleaner that it is cashmere, so they can provide appropriate care.
- Stain Removal: In case of stains, attend to them promptly. Blot the stain gently using a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb any excess liquid. Avoid rubbing, as it can damage the fibers. For tough stains, seek professional help or consult a stain removal guide specific to the type of stain.
- Storage: When not wearing your cashmere knitwear, store it properly to maintain its quality. Clean and dry the garment thoroughly before storage. Fold the item loosely and store it in a breathable fabric bag or a drawer, away from sunlight, heat, and moisture. This helps prevent moth damage and maintains the shape of the knitwear.
Remember, cashmere is a delicate fabric, and excessive washing can cause it to lose its softness and shape. Therefore, it's best to clean it only when necessary and follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer.
